I actually like how you put it in that viewpoint/terms, but it's still a melting pot if you take the smaller parts and look at where they came from. Not everything is going to blend into making a bigger, larger group. :/

The melting pot describes what happened in the US in the early 20th century pretty accurately - various European ethnic groups came together and eventually intermixed so now that many whites in the US are largely European mutts. But when you try to apply it with whites, blacks, Asians, mestizos, etc., it's obviously a myth. But who knows. Maybe in 100 years, it will happen in the way the various European ethnic groups started coming together 100 years ago and intermixing? Post edited at 8:15 pm on Dec. 1, 2009 by Bud2400

I do not agree with your first paragraph's assertion. A melting pot involves acculturation and assimilation. This can happen with or without heavy intermarriage between peoples. African-Americans are culturally and ethically American, so they have been both acculturated and assimilated--"melted" into the pot. So, if these people have been Americanized and become part of the mixing part, then it could not have been that your point, in its entirety, could be true. America's treatment of immigrants validates its policy. Whether or not it is a fully functioning melting pot in irrelevant as its ultimate goal is to become as close to one as possible. If Britain were to have Scottish, French, Irish, Bulgarian, etc in its borders, it would still not be a "mixing pot" because of its policy that it is not one.
