I do not agree with your first paragraph's assertion. A melting pot involves acculturation and assimilation. This can happen with or without heavy intermarriage between peoples. African-Americans are culturally and ethically American, so they have been both acculturated and assimilated--"melted" into the pot. So, if these people have been Americanized and become part of the mixing part, then it could not have been that your point, in its entirety, could be true.

Rereading what I said, I should have made myself clear that it was originally only applied to those of European descent - not blacks, not Asians, not mestizos, or any group considered non-white at the time.  Melting pots aren't necessarily open to everyone, but it still describes what they do for th groups "allowed in" accurately enough despite that.
